Tshiozwi Mates were crowned champions of the David Phanyane Soccer Tournament after defeating Daniel Mubva FC 7-6 in a penalty shoot-out, following a 1-1 draw in the final played at Magau on Sunday.
From the start, it was clear that the Mates were determined to give their opponents a tough time, with their midfielders delivering promising passes to the front runners. In the 11th minute, Mushoni Mavhan of Mates received a well-placed pass but shot wide from close range. Five minutes later, Mulogo Khwerana of Mubva went on a run but saw his half volley narrowly miss the target.
Mubva took the lead when striker Khodani Sithagathaga finished off a well-crafted pass from Arehone Mbodi. Mates had a chance to equalise in the 78th minute when they were awarded a free kick at the edge of the penalty box after Dakalo Ramabulana was brought down just before scoring. However, Fisters Magodimisa's shot went slightly wide.
Mates finally equalised late in the match through Junior Musekwa, who received a perfectly timed pass from Euclid Kobuone.
