What began as a dance troupe for Muthuphei Mudau — today better known as Dupa Masuvhelele — has since blossomed into a successful music career.
It was in 2003 when Dupa and a few of his friends started a dance group called the Scorpions. The young men from Tsianda Beirut outside Louis Trichardt travelled far and wide, showcasing their energetic and unique dance style while imitating other artists.
"Motivated by the overwhelming response we got during the performances, I went on to release my first album, Ri Rothe, in 2005. The album was to be the foundation of my career, and it made a profound impact, putting me on the local music map. I have since, over the years, released seven albums and singles, among them the 2018 hit single Tshithavhamesisi, which became an instant hit and was like a national anthem. Some of my songs made such huge strides that earned me awards," he said.
A testament to his rising profile, Dupa Masuvhelele won the Best Dance Album category at the 2013 Tshivenda Music Awards. In 2017, he returned to the same stage to collect the Hit Single of the Year award. His growing popularity brought with it a steady stream of bookings, including one of his biggest performances at the 2018 Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival at Nandoni.
Dupa has continued to produce new music. His latest offering is a single titled Sendelani, featuring Miss Chille and Spijo the Brazilian. The track, recorded at Masana Records in Tshiawelo, Gauteng, was released this week.
"I have come of age, and I believe this is the epitome of my music career. Since its release, I have received very encouraging positive feedback congratulating me. The message from out there is that it is the best ever since I started my music journey. This gives me so much courage and a boost for me to work hard and continue to give the best music. Unlike other artists who are battling to have their music played on TV, mine is from time to time flighted on different channels, and I am very grateful for that. I have come of age in this tough industry," Dupa said.
