By Monday this week, the total number of suspects arrested for the kidnapping of well-known Louis Trichardt businessman Eddie Gouveia had reached 12, with the latest three suspects appearing in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court. The 51-year-old Gouveia was found safe on Friday afternoon, 24 January, more than three months after he was taken.

The 51-year-old Gouveia was kidnapped by a group of suspects just after 20:00 on the evening of Wednesday, 16 October 2024 in front of his business, Fire Fly, in Industrial Street, Louis Trichardt. He was forced into a vehicle and driven away. Following his kidnapping, his captors, according to the police, demanded R15 million in ransom money. It is unclear whether any money was ever paid.

Gouveia was found at a location in Nkuzana village in the Vuwani policing area, a mere 50km from his home. His safe rescue followed a multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven operation conducted on 24 January in Fordsburg, Johannesburg, resulting in the arrest of one foreign male suspect. During an interview, the suspect revealed the whereabouts of one of the wanted kingpins in the kidnapping case, who was hiding in De Hoop village, Masia, in Mpumalanga. The second suspect was traced, arrested, and detained at Hartebeeskop in Mpumalanga, after which the duo led the police to Limpopo and to the safe house in Nkuzana where Gouveia was being kept. The owner of the house was also arrested, while another two foreign nationals who were guarding the victim managed to evade arrest.

The three suspects arrested following Gouveia's safe rescue on Friday are 25-year-old Vusimuzi Emmanuel Ndovhe and 44-year-old Khathutshelo Godfrey Mutswana, both from South Africa, and 41-year-old James Bonginkosi Simelane from Eswatini (Swaziland). The three appeared in court on Monday, with their case postponed until 29 January to allow them to apply for legal representation. They remain in custody.

The nine other accused in the case are Mishack Gumede (51) of South Africa, Nhlalwenhle Skhosana (32) of Zimbabwe, Sakhile Gumbi (35) of South Africa, Khumbusani Nyathi (34) of Zimbabwe, Ripfumelo Lodwish Ngobeni (29) of South Africa, Abdulmani Mahomed (54) of Somalia, Stanley Sithole (44) of South Africa, Qhubekani Nkiwane (45) of Zimbabwe, and Mulalo Mutswana (39) of South Africa. Their case was postponed earlier this year to 3–6 March for further bail applications. They remain in police custody.

"We commend the meticulous investigation conducted over 100 days by our multi-disciplinary forces, resulting in the safe return of the victim in one of the most complex kidnapping cases the province has ever experienced," said provincial police commissioner Lt-Genl Thembi Hadebe after Gouveia's safe return and reunion with his family. "The team will continue to track and trace all the remaining suspects and syndicates involved in this kidnapping case to ensure they face the full might of the law. The safety of our communities has reached a critical point," added Hadebe.
