Tensions within the ANC structures in Vhembe are escalating in the lead-up to the regional conference. The region once again appears divided, with two factions working hard to secure their candidates' election, which would ultimately give them control over four local municipalities and one district municipality.
The Vhembe region is Limpopo's second-largest ANC constituency and a critical stronghold for the ruling party. While no date has been set for the conference, it is expected to take place before the end of the year.
The strongest contender for the position of chairperson is likely to be Tshitereke Matibe, the current MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism. His main rival is Simon Mavikane.
The Matibe camp enjoys the support of the Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, as well as the ANC's provincial secretary, Vhamusanda Vho Reuben Madadzhe. Meanwhile, the Mavikane camp is backed by Florence Radzilani, the MEC for Social Development and deputy chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo.
Matibe, the longest-serving regional member in Vhembe, is said to have support from many branches. Some branch members credit him with bringing stability to the region and uniting people across tribal lines.
The Matibe camp is expected to field the following candidates:
* Chairperson: Tshitereke Matibe
* Deputy Chairperson: Fridah Nkondo (Vhembe Executive Mayor)
* Secretary: Miyelani Chauke
* Deputy Secretary: Dorcus Mboyi (Makhado Mayor)
* Treasurer: Fistos Mafela (Chief Whip of Musina)
The Mavikane camp's expected candidates are:
* Chairperson: Simon Mavikane
* Deputy Chairperson: Samuel Munyai
* Secretary: Rudzani Ludere
* Deputy Secretary: Livhuwani Ligaraba
* Treasurer: Mihloti Muhlophe
