The two Vhembe-born students from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) who died during the accident on 1 May were laid to rest over the weekend.

The 23-year-old Dakalo Mulima's funeral was held at Mulima Thondoni on Saturday. The different speakers paid tribute to a young man whose academic achievement and community development activities had touched the lives of many people.

The deceased's older brother, Stephen Mulima, said that the Mulima family wished to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the support, prayers and contributions they had received during the funeral. "Thank you to all who attended the memorials, funeral, posted messages of comfort and prayed for us to have strength," he said.

Tributes for Dakalo had flowed from all corners of the country, particularly from former fellow students and the people whose lives he had touched.

Takalani Mulaudzi wrote on Dakalo Mulima's Last Words website: "You were just an ordinary guy, yet you did extraordinary things, filled with ambition and dreams. You were like a ray of sunshine whose heart is just pure gold and beams with happiness. You lived a life of a lion."

The 19-year-old Rachel Matibe was laid to rest on Sunday at Murunwa village.

Rachel's uncle, Jerome Matibe, thanked all the people who had supported the family in many different ways during the days of mourning.

Rachel and Dakalo died in an accident that occurred some three weeks ago after a minibus they were travelling in crashed into the back of a stationary trailer that was on the road in the vicinity of Nyl Plaza. The minibus reportedly burst into flames and claimed the lives of seven students.

Rachel was in her first year, studying towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery qualification, and Dakalo had just graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in March 2016.
