The police in Levubu are investigating a case of murder after one of Univen's students was stabbed to death at a tavern in Tshakhuma village last weekend.
According to acting Vhembe police spokesperson Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, the incident occurred on Sunday morning (23 October), at Mmbadi Tavern, near the Tshisimani TVET College. The victim, Khuthadzo Cornelius Sinthumule (24), was apparently drinking at the tavern when a group of about six men showed up and started provoking people. A squabble ensued between the victim and one of the men from the said group. One of the men then stabbed the victim in the chest with a sharp object that resembled a knife. The victim was certified dead at the scene.
The suspect, Nkhumeleni Chabala (19), was arrested and appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate's Court on Monday, 24 October. The case was postponed to 4 November for further police investigation while the suspect remains in custody.
Univen spokesperson Dr Takalani Dzaga expressed his shock over the incident and urged law enforcement to investigate the matter speedily. "We are saddened by the news of the death of one of our students over the weekend. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Sinthumule family in Tshakhuma-Muhovhoya," said Dzaga.
