While university students across the country vowed to continue with their protests until their demands were met for free education, the students at the University of Venda (Univen) in Thohoyandou seem to have refrained from these actions.
Univen students who commented said they would not embark on protests, as they were still trying to finish the 2020 academic year.
The president of Univen's Student Representative Council (SRC), Mr Gift Chauke, told Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday that, while Wits University, Unisa, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and others were no-go areas at this time of protest actions by students, Univen had not yet completed the 2020 academic year.
"We cannot disturb our students who are busy writing their examinations. We are serious about our students' future. We found out that students at some universities are protesting, but they have already finished their academic year. We cannot join them," said Chauke.
Chauke said that Univen's first-year students were registering online for free and that their students did not have any reason to join the protest actions. "We choose to rather focus on the academic calendar and to make learning conducive for our students," he said.
Univen spokesperson Dr Takalani Dzaga was excited that the students' leadership at the university had demonstrated such a good relationship with the management. "They told us that they are serious about education and they want to complete their degrees and diplomas in a record time," said Dzaga.
"We are quite confident that we are building good future leaders here at Univen, because whenever challenges arise, we sit down and find solutions, so the academic year can continue as usual," he said proudly.
