The University of Venda (Univen) successfully held a disability indaba at their sports hall a fortnight ago.
The principal of Univen, Prof Peter Mbati, said that they wanted to inform the university community about the plight of the disabled. He added that access for the disabled at the university buildings was not enough, but a lot had been achieved.
He also said is not easy to walk without seeing where you are going. "Let us help these people to access to all these buildings which will also assist them to live the life that all students live." He also promised that the university will increase the number of disabled employees.
The acting chief operating officer of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, (NSFAS), Mr Victor Rambau, said that the government had been and was still developing programmes for young and disabled people. He further stressed that disabled people who had applied for NSFAS funding did not have to apply again the following year and the funding for them would automatically be taken as a bursary, rather than a loan.
Rambau advised companies to employ people with disabilities for available opportunities. He said NSFAS was trying to fund studies for all disabled people. He urged the universities to provide names of the students living with disabilities before the closing date for the 2018 academic year.
Travel with Flair donated a mobile wheel chair to a Univen student, Mr Mpho Sekgweni, during the event.
