The University of Venda’s runners did more than complete the gruelling 2026 Comrades Marathon on Sunday; they delivered a powerful lesson in unity, resilience and the importance of refusing to leave anyone behind.
In a race renowned as “The Ultimate Human Race”, where exhaustion often separates competitors and survival becomes a deeply personal struggle, the Univen team crossed the finish line together.
The defining image of the day came when Dr Thakhani Ravhele, Mr Kudakwashe Madzima and Dr Malebogo Legodi completed the ultramarathon hand in hand, drawing applause from spectators and capturing the spirit of this year’s Comrades theme, “Ska Fela Moya” — loosely translated as “Don’t Give Up”.
Their emotional finish transformed an individual sporting achievement into a story of brotherhood, sacrifice and collective triumph. Representing the University of Venda at the finish line were Dr Malebogo Legodi, Mr Genius Katekwe, Mr Kudakwashe Madzima, Adv Rudzani Makhema, Mr Mzwakhe Matukane, Dr Thakhani Ravhele and Ms Tshimangadzo Ndou.
The university’s Director of Marketing, Branding and Communication, Dr Takalani Dzaga, praised the athletes for embodying the institution’s values on and off the road.
“Our runners have demonstrated that success is not achieved in isolation. They carried the hopes and pride of the University of Venda with them every kilometre of the journey. Their determination, teamwork and willingness to support one another reflect the character we seek to nurture as an institution. We are immensely proud of each and every one of them,” he said.
