Like many other local artists, Khodani Muthenga's singing career began in church. As a young boy, he attended Sunday School classes, where his strong voice was quickly noticed, leading him to take on a role as choir leader.
The singer from Madombidzha began performing in 2009, but not until 2017 did he release his first album, Vhutshilo, under the stage name Vhathenga. He followed this with his 2022 album, Zwidoluga.
His latest album, Makhelwane, was released two months ago on 3 September to coincide with his birthday. The six-track EP features collaborations with several prominent musicians, including Tee Boss, Shony Mrepa, DJ Micro, Rofhiwa Nethwadzi, and Boss Lady.
"Makhelwane is inspired by my daily observations and experiences. It's one of the most popular songs I have produced. Here, I aim to raise awareness in the community about trust. People close to you can become your enemies. Don't share your most important matters with everyone - many will speak ill of you. You can't even fully trust your neighbours. How can they solve your problems when they can't solve their own? There is only one being to turn to when we face troubles, and that is God," he said.
Vhathenga shared that he was far from resting on his laurels and was already busy with a new project. "I'm working on an Afro-pop album in collaboration with Pri Fix, Chris Bang, VP Talking, Tee Boss, Nethwadzi, and Gera Beatz, among others. The album is set for release early next year," he said.
