The ANC in the Vhembe region has expressed deep sadness at the untimely death of one of its dedicated members, Mr Nkateko Mbhoma, from Makuleke village.

Mbhoma (32), an executive member of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Limpopo, was killed en route to Kimberley when the vehicle he and others were travelling in came under fire.

The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, 9 September, at Leeudoringstad. The group was on its way to Kimberley to attend the ANCYL's second national general council meeting.

The circumstances remain unclear, but those close to the situation believe it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

A family associate, who asked not to be named, said it was believed the car was mistaken for a getaway vehicle linked to a copper theft incident. "It is alleged they were stopped by what turned out to be security officers, but they sped off, fearing for their lives," the source said.

Vhembe ANC regional spokesperson Frank Tshililo described the incident as a blow to the organisation. "Mbhoma was a committed member who dedicated his life to serving the people and the organisation. He represented us at provincial level and we are short of words to express our sorrow and sadness. We are sending our condolences to the family," he said.

This is a developing story.
