Vhembe community celebrates Heritage Month

The Vhembe District Municipality hosted the cultural festival as part of Heritage Month commemorations at the Louis Trichardt Show Ground last Thursday.

The Vhembe District Municipality hosted the cultural festival as part of Heritage Month commemorations at the Louis Trichardt Show Ground last Thursday.

According to the Vhembe District Municipality's heritage officer, Mr Tiyani Marivate, the purpose of the cultural festival event was to showcase the cultural diversity of Vhembe. He added that it was on occasions like these where the district also celebrated the uniqueness of its culture. The people were entertained by various cultural groups during this well-attended festival.

The tourists also learnt how to dance to Tsonga music when well-known Shangaan musicians Thomas Chauke and the Shinyori sisters were performing. Cultural groups like Xichaichai, Thikundwi kha sialala and Xigubu entertained the tourists during the festival.

The well-known reggae icon from the Vhembe District, Colbert Mukwevho, also performed during the festival, as well as local gospel group Worship House.

The festival was attended by people from various communities of Vhembe, including tourists who visited Vhembe recently. The festival, according to Marivate, will be hosted regularly so that the future generations can also learn. "We want to make sure that our culture always exists at all times. This will also make our culture not to be lost," he said.

He furthermore urged community members during the festival to actively participate in cultural activities. It was in this event where traditional dance like Malende, Tshigombela, Tshikhaba and Mchongolo were also rendered.
