As part of Tourism Month celebrations, the Vhembe District Municipality recently hosted a Tourism Indaba at the LaNdou Guest House.

The executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Falaza Mdaka, indicated to the tourists that the Vhembe District was blessed with many heritage icons that are found nowhere else in the world. "Among these are the great Mapungubwe rocks and the biggest baobab tree found at Sagole in the Mutale Municipality, which is said to be the biggest tree in the world".

Mdaka further acknowledged that the district was proud to be the home of a world heritage site at Mapungubwe. "Tourism is one of our most important weapons in our IDP, which contributes to sustainable economic growth, such as job creation and poverty eradication. It is for all these reasons that I believe Tourism Indaba 2008 is correctly centered on the theme of Vhembe District Cultural Festival and Tourism Exposure Trip. This speaks both of how far we have come and how we will approach the next decade together."

One of the tourists, Ms Busisiwe Zondi from Kwazulu Natal praised the Vhembe District Municipality for organizing the Tourism Indaba Tour. "I really learnt a lot from the tour, particularly because as we managed to visit some of the heritage sites of Vhembe which we had only read about in books. I am happy that I managed to visit historic places like Mapungubwe," she said.
