Vhembe's crème de la crème in music are poised to reap the rewards of their toil at the first annual VendShang Music Awards, to be held at Lambani Mahagala on 22 November.
One of the coordinators, Apostle TD Netshivhodza, said preparations were at an advanced stage and everything was on track.
"This is our first attempt to empower and inspire artists in this region. The awards will feature seven categories: Best Tshivenda Traditional Song, Best XiTsonga Traditional Song, Best Hip-Hop Song, Best Reggae Song, Best Gospel Song, Best Likopo Song (Amapiano) and Best Collaboration Song. One winner from each category will walk away with a trophy and a R5,000 cash prize," he said.
Netshivhodza added that the awards would also acknowledge the contributions of local legends such as Dr Mercy Masakona, Julius Mudau, Ishy Malala, Shikatara Judas Chauke and Nelton Dama. "These giants have done a lot for the local music industry, and they deserve a pat on the back," he said.
He said nominations closed on 5 August and a team of adjudicators was assessing the entries.
"The nominees will be unveiled during a gala dinner and roadshow at Nthlaveni Block D on 4 October. The event is also aimed at bridging the gap and creating a good working relationship between Vhavenda and VaTsonga artists. It will also serve as a social-cohesion exercise," Netshivhodza said.
