Vhembe set for powerful gospel revival at Isha live recording

Isha Back to Basics is hosting an album launch and live recording in Vhembe, blending traditional gospel music with community upliftment. This event features a 60-member choir and celebrated gospel artists, focusing on cultural preservation and youth development. It aims to revive gospel roots using diverse indigenous languages.

The Vhembe region is poised for a spiritually uplifting musical experience as Isha Back to Basics (B2B) brings its much-anticipated album launch and live recording to Mom-Tendy Resort in Dzwerani, Vuwani, on 25 April.

In its second year running after a very successful one in Gauteng last year, and positioned as more than just a concert, the event seeks to revive the essence of traditional gospel music while creating meaningful opportunities for youth development in rural communities.

At the heart of the production is a 60-member choir, a fusion of a Johannesburg-based ensemble and Angels from Heaven, a rural clap-and-tap group from Ha-Ramukhuba village, symbolising a powerful blend of urban excellence and grassroots authenticity.

The event features an impressive line-up led by celebrated gospel musician Lufuno Dagada, alongside Thabelo Thavhanyedza, Tshepang Mphuthi, Taki Ndou, Ndidzu Matumba, and Pastor Mandla Tshabalala.

One of the organisers and CEO of the project, Mr Matome Manenzhe, also hinted at surprise collaborations, adding excitement to what is already shaping up to be a memorable live recording. He said the vision behind Isha Back to Basics goes beyond entertainment, describing it as a movement aimed at cultural preservation and community upliftment.

“We are intentionally going back to the roots of gospel music, to the way our parents and grandparents worshipped,” said Manenzhe. He added that the use of indigenous languages, including Tshivenda, isiZulu, Sesotho and Setswana, is central to the project’s identity, as it reflects the diverse cultural fabric of South Africa while keeping traditions alive.
