Vhembe teen's pregnancy leads to statutory rape investigation

The teenager identified her 24-year-old boyfriend, and the FCS Unit is now investigating the case.

A mother’s concern over her teenage daughter’s health has led to a statutory rape investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Makhado. According to Limpopo police, the case was reported on Monday, 8 June.

It is alleged that the mother of a 16-year-old girl took her daughter to a local healthcare facility on 26 February after noticing that she was unwell. Medical examinations later confirmed that the teenager was pregnant.

Police said the girl subsequently identified her 24-year-old boyfriend as the father of the unborn child. She further alleged that their intimate relationship began on 27 December 2025.

The matter was referred to the Department of Social Development, which advised on the appropriate course of action. Following consultations with social workers, a case of statutory rape was opened at Tshilwavhusiku Police Station.

The FCS Unit based in Makhado has since taken over the investigation. No arrests had been made by Wednesday, and the 24-year-old man identified by the teenager had not yet been arrested.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that the investigation was continuing.
