Joe Maweja registered two victories over the past weekend. They beat Mighty FC 3-1 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium last Friday evening and then beat Tshakhuma Na Ndilani (TNN) 2-1 in their losers' final match for the Amos Charity Tournament at the Levubu Rugby Stadium the following day.
The match against TNN was played at a see-saw pace, with both sides displaying entertaining football. Although they were reduced to 10 men six minutes into the game, TNN put the setback behind them and continued to fight collectively to the bitter end. Their central defender, Fhatuwani Nemusumani, was given his marching orders, following a dangerous tackle on Lufuno Nenzhelele.
In the 24th minute their right winger, Saddam Matodzi, headed home, following a corner kick by Gift Nemutandani.
Maweja lost cohesion in the middle of the park after the TNN's goal, but it was only for a moment. They regrouped from behind, creating some dangerous passes as they crossed the centre line. They found the equalizer in the 39th minute. Khumbudzo Muvhango beat the keeper with a ground cutter after a heartbreaking scramble within the box.
Both sides used all their substitution chances in the last half. Maweja's winning goal came in the 78th minute. Mashudu Mukhari scored with a header, following Takalani Ramagalela's square pass. TNN came close to scoring the equalizer three minutes thereafter. Rofhiwa Netshiungani forced his way through the defence of Maweja and shot wide from within the box.
