Vini FC from Bale village and Shakadza Ocean Swallows FC were in high spirits during the prize-giving ceremony of the Musina Local Football Association (MLFA) held at Gebs's Resort in Muswodi Dipeni, Niani, on Saturday, 26 July.
The two teams secured promotion to the Castle SAFA Vhembe League after a successful season, with Vini FC crowned Champ of Champs. The club's managing director, Mr Vincent Tshivhula, said his team's journey was just beginning. "The sky is the limit. My wish is for the team to eventually play in the PSL," he said.
Tshivhula founded Vini FC last season after noticing a lack of structured football activity in Bale and growing concerns about youth involvement in crime. "I'm over the moon. I always encourage the boys to train hard and stay focused. Sport can steer them away from alcohol abuse and crime and help them become valuable members of their communities," he said.
Vini FC walked away with a trophy and R6,400 in prize money, while Ocean Swallows took home R6,200. More than R50,000 in total was distributed to teams across MLFA streams B and C.
SAFA Vhembe first deputy president Mr Colbert Nempumbuluni praised the MLFA for completing the season without incident. "Sport helps reduce crime, and in an area like Niani, which struggles with stock theft and hijackings, this is crucial. Children are our future, and we encourage local businesses to support community sport," he said.
Nempumbuluni said he hoped to see more rural players rise through the ranks to become professionals, helping MLFA gain recognition as a talent incubator.
MLFA secretary-general Mr Joe Manenzhe urged clubs to finalise their affiliation before the new season kicks off on 4 October. He said the association planned to recruit more teams and scout young talent who could be developed into professional players.
