The death of well-known traditional circumcision surgeon Maine Mashudu Tshikororo (68) has shocked the Muledane community after he was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Monday morning.
It is reported that the incident occurred at about 07:10 after Tshikororo visited his brother’s home before walking alone to a nearby garden. A short while later, relatives heard a gunshot. When they went to investigate, they found him lying in a pool of blood. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called to the scene, where he was declared dead.
Vhembe police spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that Tshikororo had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. His licensed firearm was found in his right hand. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
Thohoyandou police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Talifhani Makhuvha, on 082 469 1397.
