The burst pipe along Ray Phiri Street in Mushongo-ville in Musina, was fixed at last by the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM).
Limpopo Mirror visited Mushongo-ville on 30 January and spoke to Mangalani Mudau, one of the community leaders.
Mudau said that he had reported the burst pipe to the municipality in November last year and again in early January this year, but that the municipality never attended to it.
"A lot of water was lost through this burst pipe. Authorities often urge residents to use water sparingly, yet the municipality lost thousands of litres since November last year."
Mudau said that children and passers-by threw all kinds of rubbish into this stagnant water, which made the whole place smelly.
Joseph Maedzi, one of the residents who live only a couple of metres from the water, also spoke to Limpopo Mirror. "We always close the gate to keep children playing inside the homestead. If we let them out, they would play in that dirty water. We were afraid that one day they might get sick from playing in that water." He said that the stagnant water had turned into a breeding pool for mosquitoes. Residents who live next to the burst pipe have a hard time at night because of the mosquitoes.
"The local councillor often gives empty promises. He tells us that the municipality will fix it soon," said Mudau.
According to the VDM's spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, the municipality's maintenance team reported back that the pipe was fixed on Monday, 1 February.
