When politics seeks to capture the arts

For a healthy society, free artistic expression must never become a tool for political manipulation.

Art remains one of society’s most powerful forms of communication. Through music, poetry, theatre and other creative expressions, people find comfort, inspiration and the courage to overcome hardship. It is often a refuge for weary souls and a mirror reflecting the realities of everyday life.

Politics serves a different purpose. While it plays a vital role in governance and public affairs, it is also shaped by competition for power, influence and public support. Problems arise when political interests seek to capture spaces that should remain independent.

There is growing concern that politics is tightening its grip on parts of the local music industry. Artists have the unique ability to reach large audiences and shape public discourse. That influence makes them attractive to political actors seeking to advance their agendas.

Many artists face financial challenges, leaving them vulnerable to promises of support, opportunities and recognition. In some cases, they receive little more than crumbs in exchange for helping to shape public opinion.

Artists have every right to hold and express political views. However, the arts should never become tools of political manipulation. Their greatest strength lies in their independence. A healthy society requires free artistic expression, not creativity directed by political interests.
