Will Gomora United pay for VFC’s defeat?

Venda Football Club faces a crucial "must win" match against Gomora United on Friday to boost promotion hopes and ease relegation pressure. VFC's Gregory Damons is a doubt, while Gomora enters with renewed confidence after a recent draw.

Venda Football Club (VFC) are preparing for a crucial Motsepe Foundation Championship League clash against Gomora United at Malamulele Stadium on Friday afternoon, following their 2-1 defeat to Casric Stars at Thohoyandou Stadium on Tuesday.

The match is a “must win” for VFC if they are serious about promotion to the Premier League next season. Victory would also ease relegation pressure from Gomora, who are battling for survival in the relegation zone.

At the time of going to press, it was unclear whether VFC right-back Gregory Damons would pass a late fitness test. Damons missed the match against Casric Stars after sustaining an injury in the game against Upington City. Should he be unavailable on Friday, Tebogo Makobela, Tshovelo Mathebula or Thato Lingwati could be called upon.

Gomora’s confidence received a boost after a 3-3 draw with Lerumo Lions at Daveyton Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

In other weekend fixtures, Black Leopards host Baroka FC at Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday. The two sides occupied the bottom positions on the log before their midweek matches. The standout fixture sees title chasers Casric Stars take on Cape Town City at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Siyabuswa. Cape Town City will be eager to respond after a 4-0 defeat to University of Pretoria FC on Tuesday.

Other matches include Lerumo Lions vs Milford FC, Midlands Wanderers vs Leicesterford City, The Bees vs Hungry Lions, Highbury vs Upington City, and University of Pretoria vs Kruger United.
