Will VFC manage to escape The Bees’ sting?

Venda FC, once a top team, has plummeted to 13th place after a dismal eight-match run, now fighting relegation instead of promotion. Their upcoming match against an in-form The Bees FC, led by VFC's former coach, is crucial for their survival.

Things are going from bad to worse in the camp of Venda Football Club (VFC). The team was unstoppable at the start of the Motsepe Foundation Championship season and at one stage ranked among the top three. VFC are now in 13th position following a poor run in their last eight matches.

Maunavhathu, as they are also known, last registered a victory when they beat Upington City 1-0 at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday, January 24. Whether VFC will manage to bounce back and beat The Bees FC when they meet at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday remains to be seen.

VFC head coach Clinton Larsen admitted they had shifted their focus from chasing promotion to avoiding relegation at the end of the season. He added that his biggest concern was that fellow relegation candidates, Black Leopards and Midlands Wanderers, are currently in winning form.

Larsen’s counterpart at The Bees FC, Joel Masutha, has a point to prove on Saturday. Masutha coached VFC for several months before parting ways with the club unceremoniously in October 2023. The Bees’ performance has improved markedly since his appointment about two months ago.

The Bees have scored seven goals in their last two matches. They thrashed Gomora United 6-1 on Tuesday, 7 April, and played to a 1-1 draw with Lerumo Lions last Saturday.

Black Leopards will be away to Casric Stars, one of the title contenders, at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in KwaMhlanga on Friday afternoon.
