The Polokwane Wolves won the Provincial Club Wheelchair Basketball Championship after thrashing the Vhembe 12 Eagles 14-0 in the final, played at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, 15 April.
Led by their experienced captain, Bethuel Sekgwele, the Wolves scored their first two goals within the first six minutes of the game, making clear from the onset that the two teams were not in the same league.
The visiting team controlled their wheelchairs comfortably, moving around easily, while most of the local boys seemed to struggle a lot in balancing their wheelchairs while in motion.
Hulisani Sivhaga, who was named best player of the day for the Eagles team, was a stalwart at the back and in the middle, but the two Munyamela brothers, Ondwela and Bethuel, were unsuccessful in their attempts to throw the ball into the net.
The Polokwane Wolves' ladies team also won their division, beating the Rhinos Ladies 10-0.
Speaking to team captain Bethuel Sekgwele after the games, he said that both their men's and women's teams were obviously superior. "They [the local teams] are definitely not in our league, but they have many talented players who can make it anywhere in the world; they just have to train very hard," he said.
After the tournament, the provincial wheelchair basketball team that will represent Limpopo at the Superbets Tournament in Mandeville, Johannesburg, was announced. Local coach Vhumbani Innocent Masakona was elected as the men's provincial coach, while Lehlohonolo Rakgoale was elected as the women's provincial coach.
