Woman (41) arrested in connection with stokvel money robbery

The police in Makhado are on the alert that stokvel groups are becoming the targets of robbers.

The police in Makhado are on the alert that stokvel groups are becoming the targets of robbers.

This comes after a stokvel group was robbed of thousands of rands when they were busy distributing the monies among themselves at Mailaskop village a fortnight ago.

"Robbers should not terrorise the stokvels, because they had saved these monies from the beginning of the year and didn't enjoy other things that needed immediate cash. All because they wanted to achieve more with their savings," said the Makhado police's spokesperson, Const Irene Tshifhiwa.

She confirmed that a 41-year-old member of the same stokvel, Tshifhiwa Mudau, was arrested, following the incident. She appeared in the Tshitale Magistrate's Court on Monday and the case was postoned to Thursday for a bail application. No further update had been received at the time of our going to press.

According to a statement, Mudau stood up and walked outside, where she made a phone call. When she came in again, the two unknown men entered and robbed the stokvel.
