The Waterval SAPS have opened an arson case with regard to the incident.

According to the police, the victim was alone and asleep at her home at around 03:00 in the morning, when she started smelling smoke and got up to investigate. She then discovered that her hut was on fire.

The police statement further indicates that she started to try to remove some of the items out of her hut, but as the fire was blazing, some parts of the burning roof allegedly fell on her. She sustained serious wounds and her neighbours later rescued her and called the police and paramedics.

She explained to the police that she did not know where the fire could have started. She was taken to the hospital where she was discharged later. The police are investigating the incident and at the time of going to press, no one was arrested.
