A group of angry women from Madombidzha protested outside the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, demanding that the court not grant bail to a murder suspect.

In April, the lifeless body of a young woman, Jennifer Netshivhangani, was discovered near the Schoemansdal Station with a wound to the head. The police's investigations led to the arrest of her boyfriend, Stephen Matshikhiri, who was last seen with the deceased.

Representing the women who were picketing, Ms Mapula Raphebele said they would oppose bail. "We have had enough of endless, brutal and senseless murders within our communities," she added. "Our young ones do not deserve to die like rats."

She added that they had decided to march to show society that they say no to the killing of women. "We went there to make a statement that all killers belong in prison. We abide by the law, which dictates that one remains innocent until proven otherwise by a court of law," she added.

The case was postponed to 17 July for a bail application. The protesters later dispersed peacefully to their different homes.
