Xitsonga traditional music artist Kenny Bevhula, from Bevhula village in Malamulele, has died at the age of 53. He died last night after losing the battle with cancer of the bladder. His family confirmed his passing on Monday, 20 April.
Bevhula began his music career in 1998 and built a steady following in the Xitsonga traditional music scene. He became widely known for his song Kece Kece, which featured collaborations with artists including Benny Mayengani.
Over the years, he released several albums that helped shape his career, including Khwiri Ra Mabyala (2013), Whawha (2014), SwaRila / Kece Kece (2015), Celecele (2016), Suka Kona (2017) and Mhisi (2018).
In a statement, the family said they were “deeply saddened” by his passing and described his work as having left a lasting impact on the arts community.
“He will be remembered for his talent, passion, and the inspiration he brought to others,” the statement said.
Family spokesperson Shadrack Bevhula said he was a loving person who was always smiling. “He connected easily with people, whether on stage or in everyday life,” he said.
Fans took to social media to share condolences and memories. Fellow Xitsonga musician Benny Mayengani wrote: “Rest in peace my brother Kenny Bevhula. I’m shattered … God’s will is painful.”
Bevhula is survived by his wife and three children. The family said details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
