Young author encourages children to dream through books

Eleven-year-old Unarine “Una” Phaswana, a published author and book reviewer, is inspiring young readers across South Africa. Her passion for literacy led her to publish "Una’s Mzansi Bush Adventures" and organise a book drive, earning her recognition as one of Mtoto’s Top 100 Most Influential Children in education.

At just 11 years old, Unarine “Una” Phaswana from Muswodi Village in Limpopo is already making her mark as an author, book reviewer and literacy advocate. Now living in Pretoria, she is inspiring young readers through her love of books and encouraging children to discover the joy of reading.

Una’s passion for reading began at an early age. Encouraged by her family to read, she soon discovered that books could transport readers to different worlds and introduce them to unforgettable characters. At the age of six, she began reviewing books to encourage other children to read and has since reviewed more than 100 titles.

Her love of storytelling inspired her to write her first book when she was just eight years old. Recently published by Penguin Random House, Una’s Mzansi Bush Adventures is aimed at children aged four to 10. The story follows a family exploring the Kruger National Park, where they encounter rhinos, lions, wild dogs and other wildlife while learning about conservation through the eyes of a young adventurer.

“I wanted children to see that reading can be exciting while also teaching us to appreciate and protect nature. I hope readers finish the book feeling inspired to explore, care for the environment and spend time reading with their families,” she said.

Beyond writing, Una has championed literacy in her community. At the age of nine, she led a book drive that collected more than 500 books to establish a reading corner at a rural school in Limpopo in memory of her late grandmother, a former teacher at Muswodi Primary School.

Her commitment to promoting literacy earned her recognition as one of Mtoto’s Top 100 Most Influential Children in the education category in 2023. Una hopes to become a veterinarian while continuing to inspire children to read, learn and appreciate nature.

“Never let your age stop you from dreaming,” she said.
