Bodybuilding may not be the most popular sport in rural Limpopo, but the Vhembe region has produced its own talented bodybuilders who have gained recognition over the years. Mpho Ndou (18) from Ngwenani village is hoping to join such notable names as Absolom Mfumadi from Muduluni village and Thembho Manganyi from Waterval, who participated in the 2022 National Physique Committee's African Pro Qualifier for the International Federation of Body Building and Fitness (IFBB) tournament.
The Grade 11 learner at Tshadama Secondary School began practising bodybuilding at the age of 11. Today, he attracts attention wherever he goes because of his impressive physique. His dream is to compete in major competitions and become an international champion. Given his dedication and determination, his dream will no doubt eventually come true.
Mpho's interest in bodybuilding was sparked when a man from a neighbouring village moved to his village. They became friends, and Mpho would visit him frequently during his weight-training sessions. Initially, he was apprehensive about seeing heavy weights being lifted, fearing potential injuries. However, over time, he grew accustomed to this and began lifting lighter weights himself. Since then, weightlifting has become an integral part of his life.
While Mpho used to have a trainer, the trainer had to relocate for work, leaving him to train on his own. Despite this, he maintains a high level of self-discipline. He trains vigorously after school every day of the week and even on Saturdays, reserving Sundays as a rest day for his body.
Mpho highlights the benefits of weightlifting, such as fitness, endurance, and potential financial rewards. However, he acknowledges that the sport is not widely popular in rural areas. He often faces curious stares from people wherever he goes.
Unfortunately, Mpho has faced challenges as a result of a lack of sponsorships, causing him to miss two consecutive contests - one in Roodepoort and another in Soweto - when a sponsor withdrew support at the last minute. Nevertheless, he remains undeterred and determined to pursue his dreams. He believes that he will compete nationally and achieve financial success one day. Despite encountering negative comments from some individuals, Mpho receives positive feedback from others, and he remains focused on his goals.
