Ompha Murovhi's journey into radio began long before he stepped into the Univen FM studios. Now a second-year media-studies student at the University of Venda, he joined the campus station in 2023 as a producer and soon discovered a natural fit behind the microphone. Today, he co-hosts SportsTalk@6 with Teejay Mashimbyi, a weekday sports show broadcast from 18:00 to 19:00.
A former learner at Awelani Christian Primary School and Dimani Agric High School, Murovhi says his passion for radio was rekindled the moment he first visited the Univen FM studios. "I learnt a lot about working in radio. That was always my childhood dream," he says. He draws inspiration from seasoned presenters such as Phalaphala FM's Thilivhali "Big T" Muavha.
He admits the road has not always been easy, but perseverance has shaped his growth. "I always push myself to do my best, and I am not afraid to face new challenges. What I like about my radio show is that it is friendly, and we interact with listeners. One thing I've learned in radio journalism is that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two in your interaction with the public," he says.
Murovhi hopes to work for an SABC station or another major broadcaster one day. "The responsibility of being a good presenter is immense as people look up to me. I have to be presentable and try my best to be a good role model," he added.
SportsTalk@6 covers a wide range of sporting codes, with the aim of developing, educating and entertaining listeners. Soccer, rugby, cricket, indigenous games and boxing are regular features, driven by strong audience interest. The show has given Murovhi opportunities to engage with prominent figures in global sport, and his sharp questioning, warm personality and easy laughter have quickly made him a favourite among listeners.
