The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violete Mathye, has issued a stern warning to motorists, declaring zero tolerance for traffic violations during this festive season. She made this announcement on 28 November at Bokisi during the launch of the Arrive Alive campaign.

The festive season has already been marred by numerous fatal and near-fatal road accidents, sparking public outrage over the perceived inadequacy of local law-enforcement efforts to curb road carnage.

As part of the campaign, Mathye joined provincial traffic officers, Makhado municipal traffic officers, and the police in conducting roadblocks along the R578, a notorious stretch in the Vhembe District. The operation led to multiple vehicles' being stopped, inspected, and several warrants of arrest being issued.

Mathye emphasised that reducing road fatalities remained a top priority for her department. "The R578 is one of the most dangerous roads in Vhembe, and we are intensifying operations to address issues like overloaded buses and taxis, as well as drivers undertaking long trips without sufficient rest," she said. The department aims to maintain a consistent presence of traffic officials, ensuring patrols every 10 kilometres along busy routes.

This year, the department introduced initiatives such as the Taxi and Truck Driver of the Year competitions to promote adherence to traffic laws. Pedestrians were also urged to wear visible clothing and avoid walking on roads at night.

Mathye also addressed traffic officials, urging them to carry out their duties with integrity. "Do not negotiate with or accept bribes from motorists who disobey traffic rules. When on duty, enforce the law, regardless of the offender's identity," she said.

The MEC concluded by affirming her department's commitment to accountability and road safety this festive season.
