The music fraternity, particularly lovers of Zionist tshigubu (drum) music, has been dealt a terrible blow. This follows the sad passing of one of the country's leading traditional gospel music singers, Aubrey Tshimangadzo Rambuwani.
The 37-year-old, originally from Harabali in Nzhelele, was based in Palm Ridge, Gauteng, at the time of his death. He was a staunch member of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC). He passed away on Sunday, 25 May, after suffering from an undisclosed illness.
Aubrey is the second high-profile gospel musician to die in Vhembe in recent weeks. Last week, the music industry and the country were shocked by the passing of another prominent gospel artist, Phumudzo Nthatheni Bisha. Better known as Vhabisha, the artist from Khubvi, outside Thohoyandou, was laid to rest over the weekend.
Rambuwani became a household name for his unique and captivating voice. He championed the use of traditional drums over modern instruments in his music. He released many songs, but the 2023 hit Kha Vhahule was the one that catapulted him to fame.
A close friend, Awelani Makongoza, said he got to know Rambuwani better in 2013 during the launch of the Vhaapostola album in Tshiawelo, Gauteng. "Rambuwani's passing is not only a blow to his family, but also to artists who were working with him. He was a jolly guy whose presence was felt everywhere he was. His unique and captivating voice could put a spell on you and leave you emotional. I am at a loss as I was assisting him with his forthcoming album, which was to be released soon. Unfortunately, he did not live to see it released," he said.
His brother, Meshack, said the family was shattered. "Aubrey was our pillar of strength and shining light in the family. He was a humble man of God with a good heart who loved his gospel music and the church. He will be sorely missed," he said.
A memorial service in his honour will be held on Friday, 30 May, at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) next to the U-Save in Rabali, starting at 11:00. The funeral will take place on Saturday, 31 May, at his home, starting at 06:00.
