Dembe Dombo, a Grade 11 learner at Raluswielo High, released his first EP on piano titled “EP Ya Muduhulu Wa Vho Tshibalo” on 19 April.
The EP contains songs such as “Madaloni”, “Phalima”, and “Ponyoka”. “My love of music started at a very young age. I took my music career very seriously. I was ready to go all out there and push my music through radios, performances, and so on. But it is not always easy to push your music as an independent artist. There’s a lot involved in this industry. Talent alone is nothing,” he said.
Dombo said that his EP was about personal and other people’s experiences. “Growing up in a family that makes music is what made me fall in love with music at a very early age. My brother used to take me along to his recording sessions, and that’s where I learned to write songs. My brother paid for my first recording session for my very first song,” he said.
He said that completing the EP had taken him more than seven months and added that the reason for the delay was because he was not yet satisfied with how the EP was sounding. “My EP touches on many different issues, such as the corrupt system, love, hate, vibes, the struggle, money, and many more,” he added.
“My dream is for this EP to reach gold within a few months of its release. I love music because it heals me, and it calms me when storms brew. I find peace of mind through music. You can send a very powerful message through music, and people can learn a lot through music. I like the fact that artists from very different parts of the world can speak the same language through music,” he said.
He is already working on a new album to be released later this year. “I am not sure yet if I will release it at the end of this year or by early next year. The good news is that I am working with many local artists on the album,” he said.

Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality. Kaizer was awarded the Mathatha Tsedu award in 2014.

Faced with challenges arising from new developments in the music industry, rhumba music artists in South Africa have joined forces and formed an organisation to support themselves. The organisation, South African Rhumba Artists United (SARAU), was launched in Vhembe in the middle of April.
The elders of the Tshivenda music group, Adziambei Band, have warned that the new generation seems to be reluctant to preserve their indigenous music, which is full of African identity and wisdom. Luckily for them, some young musicians still care about traditional music. One such local “son-of-the-soil” artist is Joshua Tshikalange, who is taking Tshivenda traditional music to another level.
