VDM still has many challenges, says mayor after first 100 days

The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tsakani Freda Nkondo, acknowledged that ageing infrastructure and population increases are ongoing challenges for the troubled water-services authority. She addressed the media last Wednesday (28 February) to mark her first 100 days in office.

Nkondo provided explanations for the ongoing water challenges faced by communities around the Nandoni dam, such as Mutoti and Budeli. She also addressed the issue of sewage spillages, stating that she and her technical services workers, along with the rapid-response team, are actively working to address these challenges.

To assist with the water and sanitation problems, Nkondo outlined several initiatives implemented by the municipality. These include unblocking sewers, appointing contractors to replace damaged bulk pipelines in four local municipalities, refurbishing boreholes, and repairing water leaks. Additionally, the district municipality recently procured 10 vehicles fitted with the necessary equipment to enhance intervention efforts.

Nkondo also highlighted several unfinished projects inherited from her predecessor's time in office, such as the raw water bulk pipeline, which need to be completed. She emphasised efforts to improve governance, noting a marginal improvement in the auditor general’s report. The Vhembe District Municipality has historically been one of the worst-performing municipalities in the province, as indicated by the AG’s report.
