Cultural extravaganza for Masisi communities

Veteran radio legend Mr Russel “Razzmataz” Tshiendangolo Mashige emphasised that a nation without culture is doomed and has no prospects of a brighter future. Mashige spoke during the Masisi Cultural Festival that was held at the Masisi taxi rank on Monday, 1 April. The event was organised by cultural activist Mr Lindelani Madikhwa.

Several tshigombela traditional-dancing groups took part in Monday’s competitions. Rotakuwa Nayo Siyalala were crowned the winners, taking home a trophy and a certificate.

When addressing the competitors and guests, Madikhwa said that communities had forgotten their roots and deviated from their culture and customs. “It pains me to see our culture fading and heading for extinction. As a community, we have forgotten where we come from, and we have inherited the Western way of living. We are doomed, and we will not even know where our future is,” he said.

Madikhwa described the event as a type of intervention. “We are trying to revive our way of life. Our youths are lost, and this is the reason there is too much immorality. This should be stopped, and they should be encouraged to stick to their roots. We are more encouraged by the interest shown by the local communities. It gives us hope,” he said.

Speaking during the event, Razzmataz Mashige called on communities to revive and preserve cultural activities for the benefit of future generations. He praised the organiser Mr Lindelani Masikhwa for initiating such an event. “It is only through such initiatives that we can be assured of the continuity of our roots. Let us all go out there and popularise our dances and encourage the observance of our customs,” Mashige said.
