Cash prizes in Madzuhe Tournament

The opening matches of the annual Petrus Madzuhe Soccer Tournament were played at the Maranzhe Hungry Lions grounds over the past weekend.

Fourteen teams are battling it out for the championship. Teams that have registered in this year’s tournament are: Maranzhe Hungry Lions, Maranzhe Barcelona, Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions, Tshilapfene Arsenal, Thohoyandou Development, Tshambobvu Junior Aces, Gondeni FC, Vondo Vibes, Itsani FC, Mukumbani Shooting Stars, Voweto Maximum Force, Muraida Youth Development FC, Dopeni Mighty Comrades and Matondoni Home Sweepers.

Tshilapfene Arsenal were the first to secure a place in the quarter-final stage of the tournament. They beat Thohoyandou Development 6-5 through a penalty shoot-out, after the teams played to a 1-1 draw at regulation time. The other match where the results had to be determined through penalties was between Tshambobvu Junior Aces and Gondeni FC. Junior Aces beat Gondeni 3-2.

The match between Muraida Youth Development and Matondoni Home Sweepers did not materialise. The teams were on the field of play at the scheduled 15:00 kick-off time. The players of Muraida did not have their identity documents as stipulated in the rules and regulations for the tournament. That prompted the organizers to call the match off and thus declaring a walk-over for Home Sweepers.

The results for the other matches are: Maranzhe Hungry Lions 2, Vondo Vibes 0; Itsani FC 1, Mukumbani Shooting Stars 0; Voweto Maximum Force 1, Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions 3 and Dopeni Mighty Comrades 6, Maranzhe Barcelona 5.

The champions of the tournament will receive R6 500 and a floating trophy. The runners-up and the third placed team will receive R3 000 and R2 000 respectively while the fourth placed side will take home R1 500.
