R300 000 for rural teams

The Zimunga Trading company has decided to sponsor a rural soccer tournament to the tune of R300 000. The sponsorship was officially launched at Zwigondini Big Tree last Thursday.

It was announced that 32 teams from around Niani will participate. Mr Anel Mudau, manager of Zimunga, presented the cheque to the organisers and stated that it was his wish to see the tournament producing players for the local PSL teams. He also appealed to the management of the tournament to manage the funds properly.

The chairperson of Safa Vhembe, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, expressed his appreciation towards the sponsors. "I'm very proud that we have grown young people of real quality," he said. He stated that he was convinced that the tournament would produce stars.

Muneri pointed out that sport was the most effective way to draw the youth away from gangsterism, drugs and alcohol abuse. The main idea behind the staging of the tournament was to identify talent.

He appealed to the business community to follow in the footsteps of Zimunga Trading and MTG Funerals and assist local sport. He further indicated that clubs cannot carry the financial burden of running the day-to-day affairs of the teams without sponsorships.

The winner of the competition will receive R30 000, a floating trophy, a new soccer kit and gold medals, while the runners-up will receive R15 000, a soccer kit and silver medals. The team that will finish in third position will go home with R10 000, bronze medals and a soccer kit. The team ending fourth will receive R5 000 and a soccer kit.

Teams ending from fifth to 32nd position will receive from R1 800 down to R400.
