In the village, life is not easy for the young Mukonḓeleli. Shamed by a past not of her making, she is teased by boys, taunted by women, preyed upon by all. This is not the existence she dreams of for herself or for her son, Journey, named for ‘one with long feet that ventured into places undesirable’. Unable to bear the sorrow that grows in her heart, determined to forge her own destiny in a world that is not familiar, she and Journey set out to find the better life that is waiting. Mukonḓeleli’s is a story that reflects the lives of many ordinary young village girls, born into circumstances not of their choice, but refusing to give in to the hardships that entrap them as they reach for the possibilities beyond, on the other side of darkness.
