Young Phindulo Chauke, known as “Quincy,” hopes to represent Limpopo and even South Africa at international visual arts competitions one day. The 15-year-old Grade 10 learner at Dimani Agricultural High School in Muledane is making a mark as a self-taught pencil artist with remarkable talent.
Quincy’s work has garnered attention, leaving clients satisfied and amazed. He has created portraits of well-known celebrities, including AKA, Asa Tee, Pro Heed, Rude Kid Venda, and Tygaboy Mukoni, showcasing his diverse skills.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, Quincy mentioned that pencil drawing found him, and his passion for art and design led him to start drawing houses and cars in the fourth grade. Initially doubting his ability to draw people, encouragement from a friend, Sharon Muavhi, changed his perspective. Practising on her pictures revealed his skill in drawing portraits, boosting his confidence.
Despite facing challenges and occasional discouragement, Quincy’s family and friends continued to support and encourage him. He emphasised the difficulty of being an artist, noting the time and effort spent on creating intricate pieces that may go unnoticed.
Looking ahead, Quincy dreams of owning an art gallery in Thohoyandou, envisioning a space where art can be showcased. His ultimate goal is to compete internationally. While acknowledging that he is not yet a professional artist, Quincy advises aspiring artists not to pressure themselves, emphasising the importance of drawing whatever inspires them as it may hold significance for someone else.
