One of the most loved gospel artists in the country, Edwell Ndou, is advising up-and-coming musicians to sell their music online instead of distributing their music in supermarkets and music shops.
Speaking to Limpopo Mirror after another brilliant performance at Tshiseluselu village recently, Ndou told the reporter that, after 16 years in the music industry, he still had nothing to show for his hard work. “My music has been doing well in the market since I started recording in 2008, but I was robbed by music shops and retailers big time. But since I started selling my music online, I can see a remarkable difference.”
He said that some, if not all, music shops and retailers paid musicians a scandalous percentage of their royalties, and often very late too. “Apart from not paying them what is due, they are not faithful as there are more players who all want to benefit through this system. Selling online, musicians receive their royalties in full and on time,” he said.
Ndou has released 10 albums to date. He believes that, had he sold his music online from the start, he would have been much better off financially. “My advice to all the newcomers in the music industry is to sell their music online if they really want to make it in this industry,” he said.
Ndou also works as MC at different functions, including festivals and weddings.
