Rendani Netshiongolwe says her disability has become a blessing.

'My disability helped me to become a community builder'

In July 2005, Rendani Netshiongolwe (44) of Matangari Tshiawelo village was involved in a serious car accident in which her spinal cord was severely damaged. After spending five months in hospital, Rendani received the shocking news that she would never walk again. Over time, however, she accepted this reality and demonstrated a positive mindset that has inspired many, showing that a disability can sometimes be a blessing.

Through her efforts, Rendani has facilitated significant developments in her village, securing a community hall, a skills-development centre, a multipurpose centre, as well as a drop-in centre by applying for assistance from different donors. In addition to these community projects, Rendani is a successful businesswoman, employing more than 1000 workers who can now support their families.

As a mother of three, Rendani conveys a strong message to other disabled individuals - to stop waiting for handouts and start working for themselves. She emphasises the importance of a positive mindset, self-confidence, and self-belief. Rendani shares her own example, highlighting that, despite her physical disability, her mind remains sharp. She believes that if all disabled people can accept themselves, work independently, and stop expecting sympathy, the country will be economically better off. Rendani sees her disability as a blessing, transforming her life for the better, and her passion lies in building her community, creating jobs, and improving the lives of those around her.

Rendani also advocates for disabled individuals not to neglect their education. Despite her challenges, she holds qualifications in community development, marketing management, and youth development. She stresses the transformative power of education, describing it as the only weapon to break free from poverty. Rendani's commitment to education is evident in her journey, including the opportunity to study community development in the United States of America in 2013, thanks to donors. Even with a busy schedule, she continues to read extensively on topics ranging from community development to business and finance.
