Strangled body of man dumped at Mahonisi

The Nkuna family members are demanding some answers, following the mysterious death of Mr Lucky Nkuna (33), whose body was found at Mahonisi in Elim on Thursday, 4 January.

Vhembe SAPS spokesperson W/O Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that a case is being investigated by the Waterval Police. According to Dathi, the police received a call from the Emergency Medical Services, informing them about a body lying next to the road. “When we arrived at the scene, the deceased was lying on his back. He had strangulation wounds around his neck. It is suspected that he might have been dumped at the scene after he was killed somewhere else, as there were no struggling marks around the crime scene,” he said.

The deceased’s sister, Ms Judy Nkuna, said that her brother had been in a toxic relationship with a certain woman whom they suspected might be able to shed some light on the happenings. “Those two were always fighting. We heard that she wanted to break off the relationship many times, but he did not want that,” she said. She mentioned that before her brother had been found killed, the family had received warning messages, telling them to come and take him away before anything bad happened to him.

“We suspect foul play because he could not have killed himself. All we want is to see that justice is served, and those involved are brought to book. We want to know why he was killed like that. It would give us closure and a bit of acceptance to let go. We are not happy that no arrests have been made so far,” she said.

The spokesperson for the Department of Social Development, Mr Joshua Kwapa, also responded to the incident. “The department has programmes that focus on people who face difficulties in their families and relationships. We reiterate our call for people who experience family trouble to speak out and approach social workers, who will then provide psychosocial support and put them through our family-preservation programme,” he said.

Nkuna will be buried at his home in Valdezia on Saturday, 13 January, with the service starting at 06:00.
