Pallbearers carry the late Lufuno Oxy “Makukuru” Davhana’s casket to his final resting place at the Makonde graveyard.

Makonde's gospel preacher, Makukuru, was a 'people person'

Famous late gospel preacher and evangelist Lufuno Oxy Davhana (52), better known as ‘Makukuru’, was laid to rest at his home village of Makonde, north of Thohoyandou, on Saturday, 2 December. He passed away at the Donald Fraser Hospital on 26 November after falling ill.

A staunch member of the Christian Worship Centre (CWC)’s Makonde Tshilulu Branch, Makukuru was known all around as he used to preach the gospel to people standing in the queue at the bank in Thohoyandou and Tshilamba. He also made many friends by preaching the gospel on buses and in taxis.

Born on 28 July 1971, Makukuru attended school at Mukula and Makonde Primary School and completed his Grade 12 at Raluvhimba High School. He worked at the University of Venda as a service worker before he resigned to venture into business. He was qualified in first aid and as a fire fighter.

His funeral, which was a celebration of a life well lived, was attended by hundreds of mourners, including taxi and bus drivers and congregants from across Limpopo and Gauteng.

Representing the family, Mr Joshua Tambani described Makukuru as a “jolly” person who was everyone’s friend. He said that Makukuru’s love, jokes and loving character would be sorely missed by his family and everyone who knew him.

Addressing the mourners at the gravesite, the traditional leader of Makonde village, Vhamusanda Vho Tshinetise Tshedza Ravhura, said losing a man of God such as Makukuru was sad. “I was truly touched by his passing, and that is why I came in person today, instead of sending a delegation. It makes me feel proud to see my subjects coming together and uniting when we are faced with death here in Makonde. My sincerest condolences to the Davhana family, members of the CWC and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing and sharing moments with this kind man,” he said.

Makukuru is survived by four children.
