Teams gearing up for ABC Foundation Soccer Tournament

The ABC Foundation Soccer Tournament was officially launched during a ceremony held at the Khubvi Benjie’s Entertainment Centre last Sunday morning. Thirty-two teams from Vhembe will participate in the tournament.

During the ceremony, Mr Lucas Tshibalo, the chairman of the ABC Foundation, appealed to the participating teams to demonstrate good conduct throughout the tournament to avoid incidents that could bring the sponsors into disrepute. Mr Tshibalo mentioned that scouts from the DStv Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs will be selecting the best players during the tournament. He added that the tournament will be an annual event, and the sponsorship amount will increase each year.

The champions of the tournament will receive a substantial prize of R50,000, a floating trophy, soccer kit, and gold medals. The runners-up will earn R20,000, along with a trophy, silver medals, and soccer kit. The team finishing in third place will be awarded R13,000, while the fourth-placed side will take home R7,000. Teams eliminated in the quarter-final round will each receive a consolation prize of R2,500. Individual awards, including the top goal scorer, best goalkeeper, player of the tournament, and the most disciplined team, will also be presented.

The toss for the opening-round matches was conducted during the ceremony. The opening matches will be played at two different venues (Makwarela Stadium and Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds) over the weekend of 15-17 December. The semi-final and final matches are scheduled to be held at Makwarela Stadium on Sunday, 24 December.
