'We need sport fields to train the future stars'

The Mphadzha community is urging the Makhado Municipality not to let them down as they have been waiting for years for the construction of a sports ground for both Madabude Primary School and the Mphadzha community. John Makamu, who is the community leader, told Limpopo Mirror that since 2019, they have been pleading with the municipality for the sports ground, but their calls have not been heeded.

“We have many talented soccer players, but we lack a sports ground to hone their skills. Our team, Mphadzha Try Again, is leading our local football league with 41 points. Our goal is to train hard and compete nationally,” said Makamu.

The local league, the Makhado Local Football Association, consists of 14 teams. The Mphadzha Try Again team is 8 points ahead of the second-placed team in the league. According to Makamu, Mphadzha’s youths have to travel about 10 km to other villages to watch other youths play soccer.

Limpopo Mirror visited the sports ground located a few metres opposite Madabude Primary School. Grass is growing tall, and heaps of sand are dumped on the sports ground. “The municipality began preparing the sports ground in 2019. Since then, they have not completed the work. This is a real failure for the community,” said Makamu.
